Level 3 Art and Design - Journey Shoes
Inspired heavily by decoden arts from Japan and Lady Gaga's extravagant shoe choices, I created these boots with a focus on wear-ability. I wanted these shoes not only to make their presence known through their exciting design, but also by the heavy footsteps they give the wearer.
Made from secondhand heeled Chelsea boots, felt, silicone sealant, hot glue and acrylic paint.

Level 3 Art and Design - Nature Studies
A variety of nature studies using a range of different media and techniques to familiarise myself with both the shape and colour of my references.
Made from lino prints, acrylic paint, collage and fineliner on acetate, fineliner, graphite sticks, collage and watercolour.

Level 3 Art and Design - Still Life Drawings from Wollaton Hall
Wollaton Hall has a great collection of taxidermied animals that make interesting (and tame!) subjects for drawing. The building itself is also very grand, with tall rooms and ornate decorations that I sketched quickly, resulting in these wobbly drawings that suggest the age and complexity of the surroundings.
Made using graphite pencil, fineliner, collage, and felt tip pen.

Level 3 Art and Design - Collage
These pieces are a part of my Journeys project, which is about how journeys are remembered, be that through numbers seen, maps stared at or road signs photographed. Then taking these memories and jumbling them up into complex, layered collages suggest the feeling of unfamiliarity that one might experience on a new journey.

Level 3 Art and Design - Family Collage
This collage is about how family makes me feel in reference to the journey through life, how their support changes my outlook on what I have to come. This was also an experiment with composition, to understand the importance of blank space and how it changes the overall look of a piece; without the cardboard beneath the main focus, the circle of family would not look like the positive, guiding star as I had intended.

Level 3 Art and Design - Greetings Cards
These cards were completed as an adventure into the production of multiples and selling artwork. I chose to use print for this exercise, as I could reuse the lino cuts I had made to produce multiple cards with nearly identical designs. I also tried some experimental printing techniques, such as string spirals secured in place with PVA glue.
Made using lino and string printing, letter stamps and freehand calligraphy.

Level 3 Art and Design - FMP Designs
For my first year final major project, I focused heavily on technology and the functional, cold designs of hardware that make up the devices we use every day. These are a couple of sketchbook pages showing some sketching and brainstorming around these shapes and patterns, and how I might use them in my project later on.
Made using collage, fineliner, felt tip pen and watercolour.

Level 3 Art and Design - Cityscape
When collecting references for my final major project, i took this photo by 'dipping' my phone inside of a computer, which I thought looked like a stoic, quiet cityscape, with a large skyscraper to the right and windows of an even larger structure straight ahead. I added some simple road markings and light beams across the photo to realize this concept and create a more dramatic scene.
Made using photography, Clip Studio Paint, Wacom Tablet 3 and pen.

Level 3 Art and Design - Digital Artworks
This is a small collection of digital artworks I completed in my free time. I love drawing people, as well as dark or gory themes and these pieces were a chance for me to explore these concepts, as well as practice drawing digitally.

Level 3 Art and Design - Life Drawing Week 1
These drawings are from my first life drawing session, and show that I am a quick learner, with an eye for mistakes. These two figures were drawn five minutes apart, and in that time I was able to troubleshoot what went wrong in the first one to then create a more realistic and accurate outcome on my second try. The focus here was on proportion.

Level 3 Art and Design - Charcoal and Chalk
This life drawing session focused on light and shadow, using the brown paper as a mid tone to add and subtract from to suggest a form.

Level 3 Art and Design - Paintbrush on a Stick
By taping a paintbrush to the end of a long stick, I relinquished some of the control I had over the artwork and had to adapt quickly to this unfamiliar way of working. I used long, sweeping strokes for the form outline, then going in with quick dry dabs of the brush to add shadow and suggest 3-D shapes.

Level 3 Art and Design - Life Painting
In this life drawing session, the focus was once again on light and shadow, this time using yellow and purple paints to suggest these. Mixing the complementary colours created muted cohesive tones that made for this rather lonely looking figure, her form undefined and unfinished as I focused on light and shadow far more than form or pose for this exercise.

Level 3 Art and Design - Life Drawing
I used a wooden skewer and ink to created scratchy lines and thick globs of ink that suggest depth and shadow on the form.

Level 3 Art and Design - Mark Making
Using a range of found objects, I was challenged to create a wide range of different marks using black ink and acrylic paint. Using not only the different objects, but also manipulating them in different ways created unique textures and designs.

Level 3 Art and Design - Cells
These samples were made with cell imagery as reference. I wanted to make a variety of textured, tangible objects that all mimicked the references in their own way. I also tried some new techniques and experimented with new combinations of media, such as the hot glue on plastic, or the angelina floss paired with tissue. Following are some close photographs I took of these, as i thought it was the unique textures that were most charming about these pieces.

Level 3 Art and Design - Latex, PVA and Plastic Samples
As I had chosen to focus on texture and close photography for this project in terms of media, I wanted to experiment with materials that related to my conceptual theme of Fetish.

Level 3 Art and Design - Fetish Photography
My contextual and visual research focused on the smooth, reflective surfaces of latex, rubber and PVC that features heavily in fetishwear and high fashion inspired by BDSM themes. These surfaces were fun to experiment with, as they reacted uniquely to colour and light, and enabled me to work with layers due to the translucency or transparency of many of the materials I worked with.
Once I had completed my visual research, I knew I needed to base my work off of some kind of shape, to reference fetish itself. I chose a human-esque form because the people in BDSM practice are what make it work; it is about stimulation of the mind and body, so the inclusion of body parts or forms was important to include to stay on theme. Had I had a larger budget for this project (or a few hundred gallons of PVA) and a willing model (and a large, dust-free space to work in) I would have created my final work using a live model where the Barbie doll is used in my current work. Therefore, the work would be a lot larger and could react to, not only a more accurate human form, but a moving one, creasing and pooling liquids as they change position.
I originally hadn’t planned on creating large pools for the work to sit in, but came across the idea when I used the content-aware fill tool in photoshop on the right-middle image.
When I was editing the photographs I had taken, I wanted to use photoshop to create warm, hazy images that have a romantic feel, as trust is so key in the practice of fetish play. I’ve used warmth these photos to create a sense of comfort, something that contrasts with the uncomfortable feel of the sticky PVA that clings to you more with the warmth from your hands. I created this warmth by increasing the saturation in both the curves and levels settings. This also intensifies the black and white contrast on the PVA’s surface while introducing and/or saturating red tones that were key for me to include due to the strong presence of red in fetish fashion, featuring on the soles of Louboutin’s famous female-empowerment shoes.
The photographs I got were really interesting, I think, and they fool you into thinking they are full-size human forms, which I would have liked to make had I had more time. As mentioned before, I think this work on a larger scale, with live models would be really interesting and would help to tie in with the theme of fetish through posing. However, I think what I have made is effective in using colour to translate a concept, the black, reflective surfaces are an ode to fetish fashion, while warm tones of red and peachy skin tones makes for a subtle suggestion of the trusting atmosphere needed in a BDSM scene.

I really like that the imagery isn't all dark, as it's important to break away from the stereotype that fetish play is dangerous and a result of rage or evil sadism. I think I achieved this nicely through the warm gazed tones in my final piece of work.
